“And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.” -Mark 12:26-27
I used to have a lot of speculations about what this ending note meant but never did it truly satisfy. You know, the answer was even there all along and I never did clearly see or understand it. I believe that every time we study God’s word, we must give the Holy Spirit time and room to grant us clarity. There is no point handling the Word like a story book or a novel and expect to get in-depth understanding of its precepts. It’s a spiritual material and must be handled thus. So, each time you study your Bible, pray for understanding as you go through with expectation, ponder on what you’re reading, ask questions that matter and then wait for that inner answer. If you’re born again and have the Holy Spirit living in you, you will receive a clear and accurate understanding of the Word. This is one of the great benefits of the Holy Ghost which children of God have: the ability to be taught and understand God’s word directly.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. -John 16:13
So I prayed and waited and then it came. And when it did, I got the whole point of this issue between our Lord Jesus and the Sadducees who didn’t believe in the resurrection of the dead.
Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.
Verses 26 & 27 answers verse 18
O the love of my Saviour! He knew their hypocrisy (asking, not because they needed clarity but because they wanted to cause a stir; an argument that is baseless: there is no resurrection! Wrong, there is resurrection! And back and forth). Jesus knew, yet He still made an attempt to deal with the base, the root, the foundation of their misplaced audacity/confrontations. Jesus, after answering their questions directly according to scriptures, doesn’t leave them thus. Rather, He gives to them the key to their freedom, a solution to their delusion, a cure to their challenge. He doesn’t just face their issues, He offers them truth that saves the soul.
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
And so He gave them the truth.
He dealt with the issues they presented and then went further to deal with their lives (their belief systems). They did not believe in the resurrection of the dead, so asking who’d marry the woman at the resurrection was a direct mockery of that belief. And Jesus knew this. Yet, He gave them attention. Not only did He teach them. He went further also to conclude on their belief system using scripture to prove that the resurrection of the dead was true. And then He left them to choose for themselves what to believe/hold.
Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
I learnt something from Jesus here. Most times, we attack people when they oppose us and we leave them even more damaged than they met us. It shouldn’t be so. We must understand why they are the way they are and after tackling their confrontations wisely, we add help that will better their lives and leave them to choose for themselves whether to take it or not.
People’s lives are affected by their belief systems. Tackle their belief systems and you’ll see the walls of their captivity tumble down. We must not stop at seeing and pointing people to their problems/limitations. We must go on to provide, by the help of God, their available help that God has provided validated by(on the basis/ground of) the Word.
We can all follow after Jesus when we understand that we are in a helpless world filled with helpless people who still think they have it all. Let’s go out their with arms outstretched and love flowing to them all. And let us allow the Lord teach them beyond arguments that the truth saves.
Remember, Jesus answered their questions and answered their souls.
Let us follow suite.

Dear Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, open my eyes to see people’s pressing needs behind their defective behaviours and still love them the same way; and provide me with the solution for their liberation from every negative belief systems, amen.
