We run this race by looking…

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:2

To start with, let me say this: our lives, reactions, feelings, and pursuits, are all a reflection of our focus. There is a reason athletes (sportsmen in general) are shown the trophy they’re actually vying for. This has a way of affecting their psychology. It boosts every fiber of their being and stirs in them a winning attitude towards what they’ve been shown.

Similarly, the Christian walk/race has a mark, that is, Christ. It has an example, that is, Christ. It has a track, Christ. He is both the way to Life and the Door into Life (I hope that sinks in). There aren’t alternatives. Your destination is a result of your focus and direction. I can’t arrive due East by travelling West. East is East and West is West. If Heaven is your goal, then Christ has to be your focus.

The sad thing here is that, many times, we are actually looking at other things while trying to look at Christ. This has a way of making us feel that we are actually looking too. But, you know that’s not what you’re doing. How do I know this? You’re affected by what you see.

Take a moment, look at a light bulb or the Sun’s light for a while. After taking your eyes off it, you’ll discover that you’ll see that light upon everything else. What this tells me is that, if I look much at Christ, He will imprint Himself into my vision and into my goals. Christ will be in my dressings. Christ will be in my talking. Christ will be in my relationships. Christ will be in how I treat others. Something becomes wrong if I don’t see Christ in my affairs. This means either I am not looking at Him enough or I’m not looking at all.

Christ has to be your focus. I know you want to make some money. You have plans to sponsor the gospel. So you want to make as much as you can. But listen up, as important as your contribution is, just know that your soul is worth much more. And that’s what God wants. You can’t run this race all the while having your whole attention on things than on Him. Take a moment to ask yourself, “What have I been looking at lately, man, things or Jesus? When I make decisions, am I looking at my Lord or am I just thinking of myself? When I act the way I do, who am I emulating and fashioning my life after, Christ, man or things?”

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2Cor. 3:18

We run this race by looking – Heb. 12:1. You want to pray this hour and say,

Father, open my eyes to see Jesus. Let Him be my ultimate desire. Let Christ be my ultimate pursuit. I refuse to be driven by things, places, achievements but by my focus on Christ. Cause this focus on Christ to begin to affect my life, influence my thoughts, pursuits, relationships, etc. and let me be changed constantly until Christ is formed in me and I’m lost in Jesus completely. This I pray in Jesus name, amen.
