Title: I’D CHOOSE YOU OVER AGAIN
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to youJohn 14:18
I had the privilege of taking a walk with my spiritual parents some time ago. While we walked and talked, my father held mum’s hand. I can actually still picture this scene, it was so beautiful to behold. As he held her hand, he told me, “If I were to be reborn on earth to start life over again, I will go looking for this woman and I’ll marry her again, a thousand lifetimes and more if I could”. His focus here wasn’t on reincarnation whether he believed in it or not. Rather, the focus was on one simple truth: I love her beyond a lifetime on earth. I treasure her enough to cross dimensions of time or age just to be with her.
As we read this today, I want you to see something unique about our opening text. John 14:18, “…I will come to you”. Behold, I show you a love and a desire that crosses age and dimensions. A love that passes status and breaks protocols. A love that is beyond name, place or standing. Rom. 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”.
The Hillsong Worship Team once sang, “You didn’t want Heaven without us, so Jesus you brought Heaven down. My sin was great, Your love was greater…“ This song resonates with every line of scripture because it reveals the heart of God. You see, you need to know this: Jesus didn’t come for you and I because He was obligated to. He could have chosen not to. But He did it anyway. Philippians 2:6-8 telling us more about Jesus says, ”who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross”.
Again, each time I read the words, “I will come to you”, I have a better sense of worth in my faith in Jesus. It reminds me that even if I were the only one on Earth, He would still have come for my rescue. Same as you, as all of us put together, maybe no one has ever made you realize this before, maybe everyone around you have only ever reminded you of how weak and broken you are, but hear me right now. If Jesus were to choose among His creation, He’d choose man again.
Yes, there was a time when God regretted making man, a time when it seemed man “pushed” his limits with God and God used the deluge to wipe the earth clean. Still, He spared one who found favor I’m His eyes to keep the posterity of humanity. Still, He beholds man and says, I have loved thee with an everlasting love (Jer. 31:3). Again He declared that it isn’t His desire for the wicked soul to perish in its wickedness but that it finds salvation (Ezekiel 33:11, 1Tim. 2:4).
David most rightly speaks about this love in Psalms 144:3-4, “Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him? Man is like a breath; His days are like a passing shadow.” He is very careful about you. With jealousy and earnest anticipation, He watches over you to bring you unto Himself.
He yearns for you and the salvation of your soul. If the Lord had something else to give for you to enter into the safety of His family, He would have given it, but He gave all He had, His very own Blood via the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on Calvary. He knew you’d be born someday and would need to know there was safety awaiting you, so the Blood paid the entire price for your soul. John 3:16
Would you turn this down right now or would you open up your heart to say, Lord Jesus, come in and save me? Would you appreciate Him at this hour and say, Thank you for leaving all, tearing down the dividing wall, just to come for me, I’m convinced that you’ll never abandon me? It is no longer a question of whether I was or am deserving of all you’ve given. Rather it is a question of whether I embrace it and make every pain you bore for me worth it.
We don’t walk the way we want anymore. We have tasted that cup and seen there is no satisfaction there. We choose to love back the One who loved us first and died to draw us near. He is Jesus. He came before to save our soul. And He will come again to take us Home to be with Him forever. The choice is laid bare before you and He beckons for you to accept and enter into His love today.
I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;
He choose you first. Now, you do yourself good and choose Him back.
